Opis

Taking into consideration the previous/ inherited circumstances, the steps taken by the Kingdom of SHS to organize care for children with sensory disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be outlined in this work. After elaborating on the existing situation, the legal framework leading to the establishment of an organized network of state institutions for such children, responsible authorities, individuals, their efforts, challenges they faced, and their actual achievements will be outlined in this work. Based on research of archival sources, it was noted that as early as 1919, there were discussions about establishing an institution for this population. Although this concept came to fruition during the period of socialist Yugoslavia, the Regional State Committee for the Protection of Children and Youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina continuously provided care and support for them. They were counted and placed in specialized Croatian and Serbian institutions for education and upbringing. In some cases, children with sensory disabilities were placed in local orphanages. There will also be discussion of private initiatives that aimed to align with the state social policy for better outcomes. To understand the achieved results of the measures taken, the level of health and hygiene education of the population will be briefly mentioned, along with the reception of organized state and social efforts in BosnianHerzegovinian society. This gap will also reveal the true situation of the status of children with sensory disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
