Janez Vajkard (Johann Weichard) Valvasor (1641—1693), Carniolian polyhistor from 1687 member of the Royal Society in London, attended the Jesuitic grammar school in Ljubljana. Afterwards he did not look for more knowledge at the university. As it was usual for the noblemen of that time, he gathered his life experiences on journeys abroad and in military service. He travelled through Germany, EngLand, Denmark, France, Spain and Italy. He was in Holland, Switzerland and even in North Africa. In the years 1663 and 1664 he vas under command of the count Nikolaj Zrinjski. He fought against the Turks in Croatia. As he probably went on his first journey in autumn 1658 and was most of the time untili 1672 away from home, he spent 14 years on journeys. Those journeys played an important role in maturing of Valvasor’s personality. They namely influenced the development of his characteristics and inclinations, which marked his life and work in his mature years. On his journeys through foreign countries he recognized that their people knew very little or nothing about his country and therefore did not appreciate it. Thus he decided to present Carniola in pictures and words to the world.
