In 1869, Austria-Hungary passed its first water law concerning the whole territory of the Austrian part of the state. Based on this law, provincial laws and regulations were issued, which also brought about the introduction of the so-called water books. These water books are a very precious historical source that describes where water-régulâtion devices were placed, what type of devices these were, who their owners were and how they changed ownership.
