The successful activity of the German minority at Maribor during the two
wars helped a great deal to the visible results of the occupier's denationalizing
work in this town. The »Štajerska domovinska zveza« (Styrian Patriotic
Union) played the main part in the Germanization of the Slovenes in Slovene
Styria during the war. It devoted every attention to the propagandiste
activity and to the organization of courses for the German language. The
occupier expected much of the mass deportations of the Slovenes, begun
already on June 7th 1941. During the first year of the occupation the occupier
dissolved already all the Slovene clubs, organizations and unions at
Maribor. All cultural institutions were treated in a similar way. The occupier
did not spare the Slovene clergy either. The worst form of his terror
was the shooting of hostages, among whom numerous organizers of the
uprising were killed. The occupier's schools had a leading role in the Germanization.
To the first meaures of denationalization belonged the changes
in the outward appearance of Maribor, which was, beside others, soon followed
by the economy of Maribor, especially by the industry, which worked
nearly exclusively for the occupier's war requirements.
