The article presents the gradual sensitization of public opinion towards environmental issues in the 1980s. Environmental awareness developed during a period of specific political and social changes, with activists warning the public about the consequences of pollution often coming from the younger generation and educated groups. Environmental awareness among broader segments of the population, which developed through media-covered topics, only increased in the second half of the decade, particularly after the Chernobyl disaster. Although awareness of the impact of pollution on quality of life was rising, it soon became evident that this issue carried political connotations more than it reflected the environmental awareness of the broader population.
