This paper focuses on the essential characteristics of history lessons outside the classroom, with an emphasis on lessons in institutions such as museums and archives, highlighting the positive effects of such lessons on pupils and students. A review of the pedagogical content that selected Slovenian museums and archives already offer to primary and secondary schools has been carried out. A wealth and variety of available informational materials demonstrate that both museums and archives are well aware that education is one of their key tasks. An analysis of one of the pedagogical workshops held at a museum is included, which demonstrates that institution-based lessons have positive effects on the development of knowledge and student motivation.
