During the First World War, the area of Goriška Brda was to a lesser extent a battleground and primarily served as the rear of the Isonzo Front. A large part of the population was evacuated, their homes and land left abandoned and devastated. Although the Spanish flu also wreaked havoc in the area discussed, it has never completely settled in the collective memory, as it is rarely mentioned. The data on deaths related to the disease are obtained from the parish registry sources of that period. The deadly second wave, which started in Goriška Brda in October, claimed the highest toll in November and December 1918. Young women and elderly men accounted for the majority of deaths. As the records show, the names of those who died as refugees were ordinarily not entered in the local parish registers.
