Description

Due to its unique castability and ductility, cast iron proved an optimum material for the construction of a variety of railings. Because very few of the component parts (colonnettes, balusters) are signed, their manufacturers are usually identified by means of catalogues, provided that they are preserved and/or available. Not many historical cast iron railings have been preserved in Slovenia. They can mainly be found in bigger, predominantly urban areas, a few countryside residences of well-to-do owners, and even fewer cemeteries. The paper presents a number of balcony, staircase, street, and garden railings by the Vienna-based R. Ph. Waagner Foundry (Rudolf Philip Waagner, 1827–1888) that are found in the Foundry’s catalogue of 1870. They were popular until the last decade of the nineteenth century, and several of them can still be seen in Ljubljana, Celje, and Vrhnika.

Srečamo jih v glavnem v večjih, predvsem mestnih naseljih, na nekaterih premožnejših hišah na podeželju in le na redkih pokopališčih. Članek predstavi nekaj balkonskih, stopniščnih, uličnih in vrtnih ograj dunajske livarne R. Ph.
