The members of the Society of the Deaf, which was for Slovenia founded in the year 1931, began their cultural and educational work approximately after five years of the existence of the Society. The work was especially livened up by the mentor Vinko Rupnik (1904—1975). In September 1936, after a rather big meeting of the deaf-and-dumb in Ljubljana a question was arisen about the struggle of the deaf for their rights. They tried to attract attention to their unpleasant situation in the society by making appearances. That these performances were a succes can be read in numerous newspapers of that time. The newspapers praised the deaf’s performances adding that the deaf should be helped in every possible way. Thus the performances of the deaf represent a unique case in the history of our theatre also in this direction.
