Thejourney through Slovenia reprinted here was made in March 1734 by three Englishmen. It forms part ofa longer account "The Trevels of three English Gentlemen, from Venice to Hamburg... 1734", first printed in 1745-46 from a now lost manuscript. The anonymous author, a felloow of the Royal Society and of an Oxford college is here identifid for the first time asJohn Swinton (1703-1777). A portraint and his signature are reproduced. Attention is drawn to his other travels, not hithero recorded, and the significance of the 1734 journal is assessed. The route in Slovenia was from Gorica, through Vipava, Razdrto, Planina, Ljubljana, Celje and Maribor. The special value ofthe accountis in the practical aspects of trave! - languages used (including Latin), roades, horses, inns, costs and even carriage maintenance. Also described here is one ofthe boats sometimes used for travelling between Vrhnika and Ljubljana.
