After the unification of Italy in 1861, all state archives
came under the jurisdiction of the Home Office. The Ministry
for Preservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage was
founded by the archival law on 29 January, 1975, and
within it a special Central Office for Archival Heritage was
established. The office is responsible for the organisation of
work in the office, it protects and surveys state historical
archives, and supervises private archives. The Central State
Archives in Rome, the Center for Reproduction, Binding
and Restoration in Rome, 95 state archives, 40 sections of
state archives, and 18 state supervisions are dependant on
the Central Office. The main tasks of the archival administration
are the preservation of records and the supervision
of public and private archives. Therefore, the archival cummunity
in Italy is divided into the institutions for the preservation
of records (Central State Archives, state archives and
sections of state archives) and the institutions for supervision
(the so-called archival supervisions).
There are also the National Council for Natural and
Cultural Heritage, Regional Conferences, Regional Commutes,
and the Council of Institutes, which are types of consulting
agencies for archival science. 17 state archives organise
education at the so-called schools of archival science, paleography
and diplomatics.
